Speedy J – Evolution

Speedy J has long since assured this place in dance music history. The Dutch producer has a vast back catalogue of gems that her helped to define the sound of the underground and now the Roots label taps into it to reissue an early gem. ‘Evolution first’ dropped in 1991 on Plus 8 Records and the aptly titled release captures a pivotal moment in Jochem Paap’s artistic growth as his sound began to take shape amid a wave of global influences pouring into Rotterdam’s import record shops. Whether from the US, UK, or Belgium, it was all about quality and this EP reflects that open-minded, forward-thinking spirit. Next to the title cut is the funked up groove mechanics of ‘Destroit’ and more bouncy, stripped back techno bounce of ‘Analogical Dub’.
