Da Sunlounge – 1972 (Transparent Yellow)

Originally from Nottingham, Da Sunlounge carved out his reputation with sets and releases that bridged UK deep house with a low-slung, West Coast bounce. This repress of his cult 2005 release reminds us why. ‘1972’ is the standout: a jacking roller flecked with dusty jazz licks and a grainy, propulsive shuffle, still doing damage two decades on. ‘Elvis’ keeps things slinkier-deep chords, muttered vocal fragments and a bassline that locks in from the first bar. The closer ‘Whore House’ doesn’t pull punches either: its sleazy humour and rugged funk make it a no-nonsense DJ tool with bags of personality. With all three tracks still doing the rounds in tech house and deep house circles, this remains a potent reminder of UK house at its bumpiest.
