Paul Cut – Second Nature EP

Paul Cut (real name Paul Cullivier) has spent much of his career building on the rich history of French jazz-house, carrying on a legacy established by the likes of Saint Germain and Llorca. He flips the script a little on his first outing for D’Julz’s Bass Culture label, opening with the nostalgic deep house/acid house fusion of ‘I Wanna’, a proper late-night work out that alternates between stripped-back TB-303 trickery and saucer-eyed beauty, before delivering the driving, bass-heavy grooves and creepy melodic motifs of ‘Run Around’. The Parisian producer goes even deeper and more dubby on the 1989 hip-house style on the ludicrously sub-heavy ‘Sunshine’, before immersing us in deep space chords and retro-futurist house grooves on the excellent ‘Fomo’.
