Various Artists – Melcure 13

A careful culling of peak selections from Melcure, enlisting the help of Toronto’s Cosmic JD as well as Dani Casarano and Felipe Venezuela on this motley record, full of works by free international music production radicals. JD opens with ‘Just Smoked It I Don’t Know’, a restrained slow-burner built around dusty drums and featherlight synth phrasing: Ildec follows with ‘Give Me’, a looping, analogue-textured electro with snaggled bass, then ‘Odyzer’, Valenzuela and Casarano’s mid-record gearshifter, before Casarano returns alongside Matias Puente for closer ‘Bass Mod’, a nod to 80s hardware funk.
